BAMBOO WHISK 101

Bamboo Whisks are the key to a perfectly whisked matcha! Here is all you need to know about how to use them and how to take care of them so they last you a long time!

Also called a Chasen, a bamboo matcha whisk is the OG way to whisk up matcha, it has been used for hundreds of years.

Bamboo matcha whisks are handmade out of a single piece of bamboo! They have extremely thin and delicate bristles, which is why knowing how to use and care for them properly is so important.

PRE-WHISK

It is especially important to soak your whisk the first time you use it. But ideally, we recommend you do it before every cup of matcha you make.

To soak, simply pop the whisk into a bowl or cup of hot water for 60-90 seconds. You’ll notice the whisk’s bristles expanding and softening.

This will make for a much smoother whisking experience, meaning you get a lighter and frothier matcha -  and will also prevent the brittle bristles from breaking off.

WHISK ACTION

Begin the whisking process by using the whisk in circular motions around the edge of your bowl to ensure that there is no matcha powder stuck to the sides of the bowl.

Whisk in zigzag motions for around 30 seconds until you get a frothy and smooth lump-free matcha.

While whisking, make sure you’re not applying too much pressure to the whisk as this may cause the bristles to break off.

POST-WHISK

To clean your whisk after use, simply run it under some warm water or just give it a dip in the water you soaked it in! Never use soap or put it in the dishwasher - this will damage the delicate material.

Dry the whisk on a whisk holder or simply by standing it upright.

If you follow these steps consistently and take good care of your whisk, it will be sure to serve you for a long time!
