MATCHA

What is matcha?

Simply put, it's powdered green tea leaves. The leaves are stone ground into a fine powder, so you're consuming all of the leaf’s goodness. Rather than steeping tea leaves in water, matcha is stone ground tea leaves, so you’re consuming a whole load of green goodness.

Is matcha good for you?

Matcha is known to have a load of health benefits for both your mind and body.

Matcha Benefits:

  • Sustained, long-lasting energy release
  • Heightened focus + concentration
  • Full of antioxidants
  • Reduces anxiety
  • Anti-inflammatory
  • Boosts metabolism
  • Anti-ageing
What does matcha taste like?

Matcha's taste can be compared to the first taste of red wine or dark chocolate. Due to the high chlorophyll and amino acid content, matcha has a unique vegetal taste and a sweet, buttery aftertaste. We’re pretty proud of our JENKI blend; it’s wonderful aroma, creamy froth, and rich/nutty flavour. We’re slightly addicted to it and are yet to find a tastier matcha. Just don’t go drinking bad matcha, it’ll be bitter and mild in flavour. Learn more about our matcha here

How much caffeine is in matcha?

Per 1.5g serving there is 48mg of caffeine.

What is L’Theanine?

It’s an amino acid found naturally in matcha that when combined with caffeine produces a calm-focused, longer-lasting energy. No prangs. No crashes.

What is an antioxidant?

Antioxidants help stabilise harmful free radicals, which are compounds that can damage cells and can cause chronic disease.

What antioxidants are found in matcha?

Matcha is rich in catechins, a class of plant compounds that act as natural antioxidants. These are the best kind of antioxidants and matcha is packed with them. More so than other “superfoods” like goji berries, blueberries, açaí berries, broccoli or spinach. Just one serving of matcha tea has 137 times more antioxidants than 10 cups of regularly brewed green tea.

Where does matcha come from?

Our matcha comes from the foothills of Uji, Japan. The home of tea and where they’ve been making the best matcha since it was discovered in the 1100s by Japanese monks who used to drink it to maintain focus through hours of meditation.

How to tell you’re drinking the best matcha?

Ceremonial grade is one of the highest quality matcha available. Our matcha is tested for heavy metals every harvest (we’ll happily share our reports with you). Check for a vibrant green colour, a fresh fragrance and a finely ground powder.

Find out more about our matcha here.

Why don’t you recommend drinking it with dairy milk?

Dairy milk inhibits the absorption of a lot of the good stuff in matcha. Plus it’s damn tasty with oat milk!

What is the environmental impact of matcha?

Matcha uses all of the tea leaf, so there’s no need for throwaway tea bags or leftover coffee grinds.

We don’t want to point fingers, but compared to your average cup of coffee which needs 180 litres of water (and often a range of harmful pesticides and chemicals) before it lands in your cup, we’re proud that a cup of JENKI Matcha can be brought to you using 5 times less water (and definitely without the chemicals).
